Brandt summary: In Brandt’s article Sponsors of Literacy, researched writers from 1900 to 1980 about there history. She talks about how people become literate and the skills that they gain.
Questions:
1. Brandt defines literary sponsor as agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who teach, model, support, recruit, extort, deny, or suppress literacy and gain advantage by it in some way. They are usually smart, wealthy and religious.
3. They sometimes don’t think about how the kids with less advantages and access compare to the upper and middle class.
4. When she says stratified she is talking about how people are arranged in a status level.
AEI: When I was growing up my literacy sponsors were mainly my teachers at school and my parents at home. My teachers taught me things about acedemics, and my parents taught me moral things. Yes I think that they are adequate. Im not sure what literacies I have not had access to.
Response: I didn’t really like this article because I found it very confusing and hard to understand.
Baron Summary: In Baron’s article From Pencils to Pixels, he talks about how computers have been bad for us and how they have made us lazy. He doesn’t think that it has expanded our reading and writing skills. He describes the impact of new technology.
Questions:
2. I do think that this is one of the main messages in his article that its hard to believe that new technology is changing writing in society today. I don’t agree with him because I think that technology has changed the amount that people read and write.
4. I think that the typewriter was seen as great technology at one time but not anymore. This technology helped to advance the writing process.
6. They contribute to the idea that new technology has made people less intelligent. No I don’t understand these images as writing. Yes I think that if they are considered writing then the technologies associated with writing will get larger.
Response: I liked reading this article a lot more that the last one I think that it was more interesting and easier to read.
